Siemens Transportation Systems

Siemens hired Fort Hill Advisors to assist them with a Request for Proposal to manufacture Blue Line cars to the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority, as well as to retrofit a hand full of Orange Line cars. The project is approximately a $200 Million job and contained clauses that would allow the MBTA to order hundreds of more cars if desired, making the overall contract potentially worth many times the original bid.

The Problem:
Making the task particularly challenging was the fact that despite many attempts, Siemens had never won a heavy rail contract in North America. Fort Hill proved critical to the process as we provided both technical and professional interface with the Authority, creating an extremely valuable line of communication.

The Solution:
The bids were graded 60% technical and 40% price, and from a field of four competitors, Siemens emerged with the best proposal overall technically but the third highest in cost. After negotiations with the MBTA Siemens was ultimately awarded the contract. This is monumental to the Siemens transportation division, but also to Fort Hill, as Siemens was so impressed with the level of service that they received that it has asked Fort Hill to assist them with proposals for many other procurements throughout the Country.
